While the Seacoast is New
Hampshire’s smallest region, it's one
of the richest in history, recreation and scenic beauty. Its 18 miles
of coastline are mostly public land, and the timeless fascination of
the ocean combines with attractions and scenic drives for a memorable
visit. Here are just a few of the region's highlights:
- Along Route 1A North, follow winding scenic roads as they hug the
ever-changing shoreline. Step into the past at Fuller Gardens,
two acres of formal
gardens that were designed in the early 1900s, featuring formal English
perennial borders, over 1,500 rose bushes, a Japanese garden, and various
annual and perennial displays.
-
Next, journey back to colonial times in carefully preserved historic
homes at Strawbery Banke, Portsmouth's 10-acre historic district,
and one of America's oldest settlements. Across from Strawbery
Banke, at
the edge of the Piscataqua River, Prescott Park is a waterfront
park that features over 10 acres of flower gardens, walkways,
seating, docking
and grass areas all designed for public use. In addition to a
formal garden, there are fountains, tree lined walkways, a
flower wall and
a separate rose garden for the public to view. Be sure to bring
your camera!
- Lunch can easily be enjoyed on your own in downtown Portsmouth,
the State’s
small – and only – port city . With over 50 restaurants that
cater to almost every palate, it’s no wonder that Portsmouth was
once dubbed “The Restaurant Capital of New England.”
That
afternoon, cruise through the Portsmouth Harbor to the historic,
rocky Isles of Shoals, past
lighthouses, or up the Piscataqua River to
the Great Bay Wilderness Area. Or, take a guided motorcoach tour of
Portsmouth, winding through narrow streets that are lined with buildings
dating back
to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Your local guide will pass points
of interest including the John Paul Jones House, where the “Father
of the Navy” stayed during the building of the Ranger, the 18-gun
ship that he used in a series of guerilla raids against the British
during the Revolutionary War.
New Hampshire’s Seacoast offers a full calendar of seasonal events
and group-friendly lodging options that fit almost any tour’s
budget. Plan to spend to spend more than a day in this beautiful region,
steeped
in history and rich in cultural offerings.
