This tour begins with Franconia Notch State Park, which is surrounded by the 780,000-acre White Mountain National Forest and is one of the prettiest state parks in the country. Visit Flume Gorge Visitors Center for a short movie which gives a great overview of the history of the region, both natural and manmade. Next, travel to the northern end of the notch, and ride to the summit
of Cannon Mountain on the 80-passenger aerial tram that whisks passengers
above timberline to the 4,200’ summit in just 6 minutes. The
State Park Building on the summit underwent extensive renovations during
the
2005 season and now boasts a new observation deck from which to take
in the gorgeous scenery; or you can enjoy the summit walking paths
which offer continually-changing views of the White Mountains Lunch will be on your own today in Littleton, NH, a Great American Main Street Community. Visit Chutter’s, a store that made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the “World’s Longest Candy Counter.” Take a photo of Littleton's jubilant bronze sculpture, Pollyanna, which tributes hometown author, Eleanor H. Porter (1868 – 1920), best remembered as the creator of the world's most optimistic character. Amble across the state’s newest covered bridge, stroll the river walk, or visit the authentically restored 1798 Littleton Grist Mill, the oldest commercial building north of Concord.
Several hotels in the Gorham area offer Moose Tours. Plan to spend the night and tour “Thirteen Mile Woods,” a stretch of Route 16 that meanders through the wetlands alongside the Androscoggin River north of Berlin, NH. Reward yourself with a grand luncheon at The BALSAMS, a world class resort set on 15,000 acres high in the White Mountains, deep in the Great North Woods’ region of the state. Then walk off that fabulous lunch by enjoying a bird watching or fly fishing program in the afternoon. Continue on into Canada or Maine for the night.
